John Murray Forbes
John Murray Forbes is an American businessman. Forbes was born in Bordeaux, 23 February 1813, and died in Boston 12 October 1898. He was a railroad magnate and became the president of the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad and Michigan Central Railroad during the 1850s.
Forbes was born to a prominent and wealthy family. Forbes immigrated to the U.S. in his youth. James Grant Forbes was Forbes' father and a well-known Scottish diplomat. After a brief time, the family settled down in Milton, Massachusetts. Although his parents were successful businessmen and he was unhappy with the environment, he decided to settle in Milton. In 1769, Forbes married Dorothy Murray in Boston, the daughter of an influential Scottish family. During his time in Canton, Forbes became one of the first railroad investors and landowners in the United States.

Francis Blackwell Forbes
Francis Blackwell Forbes was John Murray Forbes's son. Forbes was a clergyman who was also a Forbes member. He was the greatgrandson of Rev. John Forbes, grandson of James Grant Forbes. He was also a pioneer for Chinese botany. He was responsible in promoting the Shanghai Country Club. He also wrote papers on Burlingame. The family eventually moved to Europe in the early 1880s, where Forbes eventually joined the firm Russell & Co. After this, he became active in the Chinese business world, including founding the Shanghai Steam Navigation Company and operating flat-bottomed steamers up the Yangtze River.
Forbes was born on 11 August 1839 in New York City. His parents were John Murray Forbes (c1807-1885), and Anne Howell, (c1849-1865). He married Isabel Clark, New York City on 8th May 1867. The two had three sons: William Howell Forbes (1837-1896), Henry De Courcy Forbes (1849-1920), and Paul Revere Forbes (1860-1936). The family owned a number businesses in New York as well as abroad.
Robert Bennet Forbes
Robert Bennet Forbes was a sea captain and merchant of the China trade. He was born on 18 September 1804, near Boston, Massachusetts. He completed his secondary education in Boston after completing his French studies. He was also active with the opium industry and shipbuilding. He was generous throughout his life and contributed time and money to charity efforts.

Forbes' papers include six boxes of loose papers, a bound diary, and an oversize folder. They cover the years 1817-1889, and also include some research materials. These papers include correspondences, business records and newspaper clippings as well as other documents related to his personal life.
